de Gea Assesses Manchester United's Possibility of Beating Barcelona
Manchester United goalkeeper David
de Gea has been blunt about his team's chances of defeating Barcelona in the
Champions League quarter-finals. The Red Devils will play the Catalan giants
over two legs for a place in the semi-finals, but De Gea expects a difficult
task.
The Spanish international is no
stranger to playing against Barcelona, having spent the majority of his career
at Atletico Madrid before joining Manchester United. He is well aware of the
difficulty of facing their La Liga rivals, but he is confident that if
Manchester United plays well, they can cause an upset.
"Of course, it's a difficult
game," De Gea said. "They are one of the best teams in the world, so
it will be a difficult match. But if we play to our strengths and take
advantage of our opportunities, we can certainly cause them problems and even
beat them."
The 28-year-old also believes
Manchester United's recent form, in which they have won eight of their last
nine games in all competitions, will give them a good chance of reaching the last
four.
"Right now, we're in good
shape and playing very well," De Gea said. "We've been very
consistent in recent weeks, which is essential for success in these big games.
We must remain focused and play our best football for the entire 90-minute
period."
De Gea is also aware of Barcelona's
threat going forward, with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez both in excellent form
this season. He believes Manchester United must remain defensively organized
and take their chances when they come from the other end of the field.
"They are a tremendously
talented squad, and Messi and Suarez are both world-class players," De Gea
added. "We must remain disciplined and concentrated in defense, limiting
their opportunities. At the same time, we must be clinical in front of goal and
seize any opportunities that present themselves."
De Gea's words show his belief in
Manchester United's capacity to pull off an upset against Barcelona. His team
will need to put in a near-perfect performance across the two legs to advance,
but his remarks will definitely inspire them.
If Manchester
United can defeat Barcelona and advance to the semi-finals, it will be a
fantastic accomplishment that will undoubtedly boost their season. De Gea will
be hoping that his team takes inspiration from his words and puts up an
exceptional performance to advance to the last four.
